How to Conduct Office Fire Drills

If you’re a business owner with on-site employees, having an evacuation plan is required by law. This plan details the evacuation routes and fire safety protocols to keep your workers safe if a fire breaks out. Fire drills are vital to test the effectiveness of your company’s fire safety protocols and preparedness for a fire emergency.

Read our step-by-step guide to find out how to conduct a fire evacuation drill on your premises.

Evacuation Plan

Before beginning the fire drill, you must put together an evacuation plan to inform the employees what to do in the event of a fire. This includes the evacuation routes employees should follow depending on where they are in the building and the location of the outdoor meeting point.

Inspection of Fire Equipment

Before the drill, you must inspect all the fire equipment on your property to ensure they are all in working condition. Fire safety equipment includes:

  1. Fire alarms
  2. Evacuation routes with emergency lighting
  3. Fire doors
  4. Fire extinguishers

Training Plan

Before conducting the fire drill, you’ll need to hold a meeting with all staff members to prepare them for the fire practice and ensure they know the fire safety procedures. Explain the evacuation plan thoroughly, giving a step-by-step account of the evacuation plan from the moment the alarm sounds. Likewise, brief the employees on where the fire safety equipment like fire alarms and fire extinguishers are found in the event of a real fire.

Inform Employees of Fire Drill

Once you have decided on the date and time of the intended fire drill, it’s important to inform the employees. The fire drill shouldn’t be sprung on them without notice, send out an email confirmation with the exact date and time of the fire drill to let the employees know ahead of time.

Sound the Alarm

When the time has come to begin the fire drill, you should sound the alarm to alert the employees, like you would if it were a real emergency.

Evacuate

Employees should stop what they’re doing immediately and follow the agreed-upon evacuation procedures to leave the building via the evacuation routes.

Headcount

A headcount should be taken promptly after employees have arrived at the outdoor meeting point to ensure everyone is accounted for and no one remains in the building or elsewhere.

Review and Analyse

Once the fire drill is completed, let all employees return to the building. As the manager, you should reflect on how the fire drill went and whether any improvements could be made. Consider whether the procedures were effective at evacuating staff quickly and whether staff followed the protocols correctly.

Follow-up Meeting

Schedule a meeting with all employees to discuss where improvement is needed or any changes you might have made to the evacuation plan to ensure that any fire evacuation in the future is as safe, fast and efficient as possible.
